Servoy Open Source?
News
Written by Harjo Kompagnie | Friday, 09 April 2010 00:53

I was reading an article about Servoy here:

http://www.sramanamitra.com/2010/03/24/deal-radar-2010-servoy/

Somewhere at the end of this article, I read this:

"Servoy started in bootstrap mode. In 2006, to accelerate growth, it did a $1.2 million seed round from Dutch venture capital firm Newion Investments. The company may do a real round this year in conjunction with its open-source move. Ideally, the next investment would be U.S.-based in Silicon Valley. Revenues are approximately $10 million."

I just can't help but believe that if Servoy had put all the energy they've spent on media exposure these past couple of years into enabling developers -- documentation, training, the SAN, features that aren't thrown out half finished -- Servoy would be in a completely different place right now. As in 10x's as many developers using Servoy.

This hardcore pursuit of media coverage while barely dealing with developer resources is a real shame. Developers aren't reading "Deal Radar" or press releases. A flat developer growth rate and almost zero tweets about Servoy by developers over the past two years is the results Servoy is getting with their current strategy.

Compare this with competing technologies over the same time period and Servoy is getting trounced. Even though it is a superior product (for now).

I guess the answer is more media coverage that no developers are reading.

Whether this article is founded or not is debatable, however I strongly believe that going the Open Source route would be beneficial to Servoy (and to the community) and would get them the traction they are struggling to gain facing Microsoft or Oracle...

+1 for me!

And what to think of this one: Quote:
Servy believes that an exit could happen the next three years, but right now they are having too much fun building the company. “Servoy R&D started back in 1997 and the founders have put too much blood, sweat and tears in it to go for an easy exit,” Aleman adds.
